"I've been an indie fantasy fiction author for over a decade. Before that I was a non-fiction author, and as of this year I've been in the self-publishing game for two full decades. Let me tell you, I've been through a lot of service providers in this industry—editors, proofreaders, layout artists, book formatters, and yes, cover designers. Most of the really good ones eventually get greedy, taking on more work than they can handle, then they start cutting corners. Sure, the covers they turn out look good at arm's length, but zoom in and you'll see where they skipped steps in the design process.
